US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning against Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in New York City's 2025 mayoral election, suggesting that the city could face financial repercussions from the federal government if Mamdani is elected.

In a televised interview aired over the weekend, Trump described Mamdani as a “hardline communist” and claimed that his potential leadership would endanger the city’s stability and economy. Trump, who is also seeking another term as president, declared that should he return to the White House, he would withhold federal aid from New York unless Mamdani aligns with what Trump calls "responsible governance."

Mamdani, 33, recently secured the Democratic nomination and is now a frontrunner in the race for City Hall. If successful in November, he would become the first Muslim and first South Asian mayor in New York City’s history. He has been serving as a member of the New York State Assembly for Queens' 36th District since 2021.

Born in Uganda to an Indian Muslim father, Mamdani has made a name for himself through progressive advocacy and grassroots organizing. His campaign has energized younger voters and the city’s diverse communities through viral social media content and an unapologetically bold political platform.

Mamdani’s outspoken criticism of Israeli military actions in Gaza and his vocal support for Palestinian rights have drawn both praise and controversy. While some national figures have condemned his positions, human rights activists and progressive groups have rallied behind him, viewing his candidacy as a transformative opportunity for New York politics.
