Myanmar Lifts State of Emergency, Steps Up Preparations for December Election

Myanmar's military junta government announced on Thursday (July 31) the lifting of the state of emergency and its intention to hold an election in December. Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun stated, “The state of emergency is being lifted today to hold an election on the path to a multi-party democracy.”

The military had declared the emergency in February 2021 after ousting the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. That triggered widespread civil unrest and an armed resistance that has cost thousands of lives. Min Aung Hlaing has held consolidated authority since then across all government branches. Now, he frames the upcoming election as a solution to national conflict.

State media reported formation of an 11-member electoral commission headed by Min Aung Hlaing. MRTV confirmed he will continue leading the country as interim president while overseeing the vote.

Analysts speculate that Min Aung Hlaing may seek to become president post-election or remain in command via military channels, effectively continuing his leadership role.

No fixed election date has been declared yet, but the junta has started registering parties and initiated voting machine training across the country.
