United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over the spread of misinformation targeting Bangladesh, as stated by Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain.
On Saturday, March 15, during a joint press conference at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka, the Secretary-General emphasized that his visit aims to counter false narratives and destabilization efforts by showcasing Bangladesh's positive and strong image.
Advisor Touhid Hossain highlighted that the Secretary-General acknowledged the complexities of the reform process necessary for free and fair elections and Bangladesh's "true transformation." He also reaffirmed the UN's full commitment to supporting reforms under the leadership of Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Guterres pledged to support the interim government's efforts and stand by Bangladesh and its people. His assurance aligns with the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people, fostering successful reforms and a transition to democracy.
To understand the aspirations of Bangladesh's future, the Secretary-General held three meetings with youth, civil society, and members of the Reform Commission. These groups' contributions are paving the way for democratic transition plans and implementing reforms in political, judicial, electoral, administrative, anti-corruption, and police sectors.
The visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's UN membership, marking a historic moment for both Bangladesh and the UN. Guterres also observed the constructive phase of a "new Bangladesh" following the sacrifices of the July-August uprisings.
During his visit, the Secretary-General toured the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar, expressing solidarity with the forcibly displaced people and committing to work for their dignified, secure, and rights-based repatriation to Myanmar. He interacted with Rohingya children and youth, witnessing their efforts to prepare for survival and honorable return through skill development and training.
In a unique gesture of solidarity, Guterres joined an iftar with over 100,000 Rohingya individuals, including the Chief Advisor, making it a historic moment of unity.
