In response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Maldives government has imposed an immediate ban on the entry of Israeli nationals. On Tuesday, President Mohamed Muizzu officially enacted the restriction by signing into law a parliamentary-approved measure.

A statement from the President’s Office emphasized that the decision reflects the country’s firm stance against Israel’s ongoing atrocities and genocide targeting Palestinian civilians. The government reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people.

A spokesperson from President Muizzu’s office confirmed that the restriction takes effect immediately.

The Maldives, a Muslim-majority island nation renowned for its luxurious tourist destinations, has previously allowed Israeli visitors. In February 2025, only 59 Israeli tourists traveled to the Maldives, compared to a total of 214,000 foreign visitors during the same period.

Historically, the Maldives lifted its ban on Israeli tourists in the early 1990s and attempted to restore diplomatic relations in 2010. However, the ongoing war in Gaza has led to mounting pressure from both the government and opposition parties to prohibit Israeli visitors once again.

Israel had previously advised its citizens to exercise caution while traveling to the Maldives.

Since October 7, 2023, the conflict in Gaza has escalated, with Israel accused of committing severe atrocities. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that a total of 50,983 Palestinians have been killed, including at least 1,613 deaths following the breakdown of the ceasefire in mid-March 2025.
