In a significant move, the Advisory Council has approved the renaming of Gazipur Digital University to University of Frontier Technology Bangladesh. The decision was finalized during a council meeting held on Thursday, August 7, at the Secretariat, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

According to Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, the renaming was prompted by protests from students who opposed the earlier name change made by the interim government.

Originally established in 2016 in Kaliakair, Gazipur, the university was founded as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh, a specialized institution focusing on digital and technological education. However, in February this year, the interim administration renamed it to Gazipur Digital University, sparking dissatisfaction among students and stakeholders.

Student protests escalated in the months that followed, urging the authorities to reconsider the new name. Responding to the backlash, the Advisory Council has now granted both policy-level and final approval to the draft ordinance titled "Gazipur Digital University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025."

The newly approved name — University of Frontier Technology Bangladesh — is intended to better reflect the institution’s mission and focus on cutting-edge technological advancement.

This marks the second time the university has undergone a name change since its inception, highlighting the sensitivity and significance of institutional identity in Bangladesh’s higher education landscape.
