Bangladesh is Keen to Expand Cooperation with Russia in the Field of Nuclear Energy.

Emphasizing the development of peaceful nuclear technology and common interests, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said Bangladesh is keen to expand cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, the state-owned Atomic Energy Corporation of the Russian Federation, called on Professor Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Wednesday. 

The meeting mainly discussed the ongoing cooperation in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP). The project is considered as an important milestone in ensuring the use of nuclear energy to strengthen Bangladesh's energy security. 

During the discussion, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus expressed gratitude for the continuous support of Rosatom and stressed the need for timely completion of the project to meet the growing energy demand of Bangladesh. "We are expecting your support, which is very important for us," the chief adviser told the Rosatom director general. ’  

Director General Likhachev apprised Professor Yunus of the latest progress of the Rooppur project and informed that the construction work is progressing as planned and several important milestones have already been achieved. Likhachev said, "Any decision of the people of Bangladesh is acceptable for us. ’

He informed the chief adviser that the test run of the project is underway and trial production will start soon. He also assured that ROSATOM is committed to successfully complete the project maintaining complete safety and international standards.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the importance of amending the Inter-Government Debt Agreement (IGCA), where it was proposed to extend the loan tenure till the end of 2026.

In this regard, both sides agreed to sign Protocol No. 2 of the IGCA soon, which will follow the necessary formalities. They also stressed the need for continued cooperation for long-term success, including personnel training, safety protocols and technology transfer.

Principal Secretary to the Principal Adviser Siraj Uddin Miah, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Md Mokabbir Hossain and Secretary of the Economic Relations Division Md Shahriar Kader Siddique were, among others, present at the meeting.

Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Khozin, Deputy Chairman of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia Alexey Ferropontov, First Deputy Director General of Rosatom Andrei Petrov and Project Director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Vice President of ASE-JSE Alexey Deri were present on behalf of the Russian side.
